Benefits of worm-casting tea
Worms eat organic matter, such as kitchen scraps and cardboard, and then excrete it as worm castings. These castings contain many beneficial nutrients for plants, including nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium carbonate, magnesium oxide, and a wide variety of micronutrients like iron, manganese, and copper.
The high concentration of these nutrients makes worm-casting tea ideal for feeding plants that need extra nutrients to grow well or survive harsh conditions like drought or extreme temperatures. For example:

Worm-casting tea is a useful, all-natural liquid fertilizer that you can use to water plants.
What is worm-casting tea?
It’s what you get when you steep some of your castings in water. You may have heard this referred to as worm tea, but we prefer the more scientific term “castings.” Castings are the solid material that comes out of the bottom of your worm bin after digestion takes place, and they contain all the nutrients your worms have been able to extract from their food source. When mixed with water and allowed to steep for a few days, these castings turn into a rich liquid that can be diluted and used as fertilizer for plants.
How do I make worm-casting tea?
There are three steps involved in making worm-casting tea: gathering castings from your bin, steeping them in water for 3-4 days, then diluting and storing the resulting liquid fertilizer for later use.

Worm-casting tea is a great way to get your daily dose of organic matter. It’s also super easy to make, and it only takes about two minutes (plus an overnight rest period).
Here’s what you need:
- 1 cup of worm castings
- Filtered water
- A small pot or jar with a lid (we recommend a mason jar)
- A filter (we recommend using a mesh tea ball)
Step 1: Put the worm castings in your container. Add enough water to cover them completely. You can use either hot or cold water; it doesn’t matter which one you choose.
Step 2: Cover the container and let it sit overnight at room temperature (about 65 degrees Fahrenheit). You’ll know it’s ready when the worms have processed all the nutrients out of their food and into your tea!
